History: 1920's -1950's

THE GROUP

In 1921 Guido Bitossi transferred his activity from the banks of the River Arno, where, at that time, the greater part of the kilns were concentrated, to a much larger area situated on the main road just outside Montelupo.
As a manufacturing company, Maioliche Artistiche Guido Bitossi, was steeped in the artistic tradition of graphite and renaissance maiolica, reproducing the works of Della Robbia.
After a few years, in
1929 the company underwent its first important expansion of what in the meantime had become the "Ditta Cav. Guido Bitossi & Figli: Maioliche Artistiche".

During the Second World War the factory remained undamaged and production continued.
On the other hand , the destruction of the greater part of the factories of the glaze and colour producers obliged the sons of Guido (who had died prematurely in
1937) to produce frits, glazes, colours and ceramic bodies, not only for their own use but also for the numerous manufacturers of the Florentine area.
The development of this new activity saw the start (
1947) of the Colorificio Ceramico Della Robbia, later Colorobbia.

Halfway through the
1950’s the production of liquid gold and metallic lustres were begun for the decoration of ceramics, glass and porcelain. The growing demand for artistic ceramics and the start of a new market for industrial ceramics (transformation and development of the ceramic district of Sassuolo) made the construction of a new factory necessary, next to the existing one.
